About Us
Government College of Nursing, Kozhikode, started in the year 1982 as the second Government College of Nursing in Kerala. It was affiliated to the University of Calicut until 2010 and is currently affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences, Thrissur. The college began functioning in April 1982 at the Government College of Nursing, Thiruvananthapuram, and shifted to Kozhikode in September 1982.
Initially, the college operated on the top floor of the Nurse’s Hostel in the Medical College Campus until 1985, when it moved to the top floor of the Government Dental College, Kozhikode. In 1997, the College of Nursing moved to its permanent building on the Medical College Campus.
The annual intake of the B.Sc. Nursing programme was 25 in 1982, which was later enhanced to 50 in 1992 and 60 in 2002. From 2018 onwards, students are admitted under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS), with 5-8 seats annually. Additionally, students have been admitted under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota since the 2020 admission.
The GNM programme, exclusively for students belonging to Scheduled Castes, started in 1985 with an annual intake of 30. The M.Sc. Nursing Programme began in 1996 with an annual intake of 8 students across two specialties. This was increased to 30 in 2006 with five specialties: Medical Surgical Nursing, Child Health Nursing, Community Health Nursing, Obstetric and Gynaecological Nursing, and Mental Health Nursing. From 2020 onwards, the annual intake for B.Sc. and M.Sc. Nursing is 66 and 33 respectively, including the EWS quota.

The Faculty of the Government College of Nursing, Kozhikode are guided by the following philosophy of nursing education:
- The Faculty of the Government College of Nursing believes that nursing is a professional discipline based on the holistic concept of health care, directed towards rendering quality care to the clients with commitment & compassion.
- We believe that Nursing as a profession and a discipline utilizes knowledge derived from arts, sciences (physical, biological and behavioral), humanities and human experience. Nursing science incorporates clinical competence, critical thinking, communication, teaching learning, professionalism, and caring and cultural competency.
- We believe that health as a dynamic state of being on a continuum from optimal wellness to illness and a state of health exists when a person functions as an integrated whole, living and interacting with environments in a productive manner.
